Le Penny Black est le premier timbre postal de l'histoire. Il a été émis le 1er mai 1840 au Royaume-Uni de Grande-Bretagne et d'Irlande à l'initiative de Sir Rowland Hill, pour un usage officiel à partir du 6 mai, dans le cadre de la réforme du système postal britannique destinée à faire désormais payer l'expéditeur plutôt que le destinataire.

Ce timbre mesure 2,2 cm de haut et 1,85 cm de large et est d'une valeur de 1 penny; Initialement non-dentelé, il le deviendra, après son changement de couleur en brun-rouge (pour mieux remarquer l'oblitération), sporadiquement et progressivement à partir de 1850, puis définitivement en 1854.

The Penny Black is the first postage stamp in history. It was issued on May 1, 1840 in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland at the initiative of Sir Rowland Hill, for official use from May 6, as part of the reform of the British postal system intended for now charge the sender rather the recipient. 

This stamp is 2.2cm high and 1.85cm wide and is worth 1 penny;  Initially imperforate, it will become, after its color change to brown-red (to better notice the obliteration), sporadically and gradually from 1850, then definitively in 1854.
